American Silver Eagle Coins are one of the most popular and best ways to invest in silver. They also make great keepsakes and gifts. These are considered to be the most beautiful of the silver coins ever minted in the history of United States of America.

Minted since 1986, it is the United State Mint's Dollar coin minted specially for silver bullion for collectors. This paved the way for commercial success of silver and gold bullion coins that were sold to the public. These are deemed as the official silver bullion of the USA because of the purity, content, and actual weight. There are several investors and bullion collectors across the globe interested in the American Silver Eagle coins.

Design of American Silver Eagle Coins:

The silver proof coin has an Adolph A. Weinman's full-length figure of Liberty on its obverse side. The Liberty is enveloped completely in the U.S. Flag with her right hand extended while her left hand holds branches of laurel and oak. The coins reverse side has a heraldic eagle with a shield. The right talon has an olive branch while the left holds arrows. This was specially designed by the United States Mint engraver John Mercanti. This in short portrays the stand of United States over the world conditions.

The U.S. mint restarted issuing Silver Proof Sets in 1992. This continues till date mainly because of its popularity. Silver Proof Set collections are easy to collect is one is planning to start a collection. The specifications indicate that the American Eagle Silver Proof Coin has a purity of 99.9%. The face value of the one ounce coin is 1 dollar. The dimensions are marked at 1.598 inches in diameter. The coin weighs around 1.0000 troy ounces and contains around 0.999 silver troy ounces. These are constant favorites among the collectors and are available in plenty until the next release. 1987 was the first year of mint of a Silver Proof.

Tips for Potential American Silver Eagle Coin Investments:

1. The largest portion of the value in the coin is the silver content, so focus on quanity instead of buying mint condition coins which are graded by PCGS and NGC. These coins will be the backbone of your silver coin portfolio and help you in a better way and this will help you to keep readily liquidated silver bullion coins.

2. If you buy a sealed mint box you may be lucky enough to find some mint condition coins for free, which you may be able to resell for a higher price.

3. Check the date of the coin and see how many were minted in that year. Some coins are given an extra premium due to low availability.

4. Compare the coin's premium over the price of silver. The premium can fluctuate, especially when the coins are in high demand.

The American Silver Eagle is hard to come by and collectors are on constant look out for these coins. No matter how much you invest in American silver eagle coins, it is easy to buy in small or large quantities at a site such as tradeplacer.com to build and fortify your precious metals portfolio.

From time immemorial, the great civilizations based their economies around the "Gold Standard," or the value of gold. Later on, European countries came to prefer silver, which created the "Silver Standard." Both precious metals were then concurrently used for the valuation of currencies of various countries. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, America used this dual system as well, with its silver standard using the Spanish silver dollar, the real, as well as the gold standard using its own gold dollar, the Eagle, that the countries recovering from internal wars would soon covet.

The crisis of free banking that resulted in the American Civil War brought the conclusion of that silver standard. Silver coins were no longer minted by then when the succeeding financial crises of the World War plus the Depression required paper currency with gold reserves to back them up as a solid foundation. However, by 1933, the floundering economy required Congress to change the gold standard to silver for the first time in American history. This was kept set until 1968, when it was common practice in the U.S. Treasury, not the Federal Reserve, to allow people to redeem silver dollars and silver bullion for silver certificates.

Silver wasn't part of normal circulation again until the 1980s, when the Defense National Stockpile found it had an more than enough silver and asked for Congressional approval to sell it. So during the term of President Ronald Reagan, the very first silver coins in decades - the American Silver Eagles - were minted in 1986. They were first minted in San Francisco from 1986 - 1992, thus earning them the mintmark "S." Afterward, they were minted inside the Philadelphia press for the following 7 years and given the "P" mark. From 2001 to today, they were minted at West Point and have the "W" mintmark. The most awaited coin of this decade, the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle, has made a record in sales of silver bullion coins. After rocky starts from January 2010, the expected shortage of coins pushed the minting and subsequent sales to November 19, 2010. Impressively priced at .95 each, one household was given a maximum allowance of 1 hundred coins from the United States Mint.

The American Eagle is the emblem of the United States of America with its great strength and majestic beauty symbolizing freedom. Whether soaring above towering mountains and canyons or gliding through picturesque valleys at one with Nature, the eagle has unlimited freedom. The Eagle appears in the Seals of many States, on most US gold and silver coinage, and it is used for decorative patriotic purposes.

The American Silver Eagle is the Official Silver Bullion coin of the USA initially released by the US Mint on November 24, 1986. It is guaranteed for weight, content and purity to contain one troy ounce of.999 pure silver with an actual composition of 99.93% silver and 0.07% copper. It weighs 31.101 grams (1.000 ounces), has a diameter of 40.6 mm (1.598 inches) and is 2.98 mm (0.117 inches) thick with a reeded edge.

Originally issued as an investment coin there are three versions:

1. Bullion: A bullion coin is valued by its weight in a specific precious metal and is sold through authorized coin and bullion dealers. The American Silver Eagle bullion coin an accepted by Individual Retirement Account investments.
2. Proof: This is the collectible proof version available in perfect grades directly from the US Mint and carries a "P" (proof) mark.
3. Uncirculated: This recent minting is the uncirculated collectible, hand-loaded into the coining press, struck on specially burnished blanks and carries the "W" mark of the United States Mint at West Point.

The American Eagle is the largest silver dollar ever issued by the U.S. Mint and is highly prized for its beauty and silver content. The obverse design comes from the popular "Walking Liberty" design by Adolph A. Weinman originally used on the 1916 to 1947 United States' half-dollar coin. It has the official motto "In God We Trust"with the word LIBERTY around the out top half and the year of issuance. The reverse designed by John Mercanti depicts a heraldic eagle behind a shield with an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left talon. Above the eagle are thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Colonies and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" appears with the phrases UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR. The American Eagle is"official legal tender" at face value; however its silver value far exceeds this.

The Silver Eagle is sort after by collectors who collect the series by date. A complete collection must include two key dates. The 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle which was only included in the 1995 Gold Eagle Proof Set and had a minimal mintage of 30,125 coins. The 2006-W Reverse Proof Silver Eagle which was only included in the 2006 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set, which was limited to 250,000 sets.

Some bullion or proof issues carry premiums due to lower mintages. A classic example is The Bullion 1996 Silver Eagle which had an extremely low mintage of just 3,603,386 while only 498,293 of the 1996 Proof Silver Eagles were minted. The 1994 Proof Silver Eagle had the lowest series mintage for a standard proof coin of just 372,168.

Silver continues to be a good investment with the ounce price in the new Millennium rising from around the $ US5 in 2000 to over in 2010. Forecasters predicate continuing upward movement driven by the jump in retail demand along with the increase

American Silver Eagle Proofs are in high demand right now. Many collectors have proudly put together complete sets of the series, that contains every single date obtainable.

When the most recent American Silver Eagle Proof was released late this past year, on November 19, 2010, it could be purchased for .95 through the U.S. Mint. Each and every household was strictly limited to buying a total number of one hundred coins.

Public demand ended up being very strong, to say the least!

In the first hrs subsequent to the coins release, the U.S. Mint suffered a variety of difficulties by clients who tried to buy from the website or even utilizing their toll-free number.

The proof silver eagle ended up being sold out by the end of December, having sold out quickly.

834,879 coins were purchased based on the most current sales record from the U.S. Mint!

Taking into consideration the fact that the premium that you pay is considerably above the actual spot price of silver, you might question the reason why the desire with regard to these coins is so high.

Were the proof versions really worth the extra amount you pay out?

I resolved to do a little investigating. . .

To start with, let's examine precisely what tends to make this specific coin so exceptional.

1. Each and every coin is composed of exactly one ounce. of .999 fine silver.

2. If you glance carefully at one, you will observe immediately their particular astonishing splendour, extremely sharp relief, as well as a backdrop which is nearly mirror-like. They have a unique cameo effect due to their frosted, sculpted foregrounds.

3. To realize all of this fantastic splendor, the silver eagle proof coin is actually created by way of a specialised minting practice.

4. All this commences when a burnished silver coin blank is pressed, and then fitted together with unique dies.

5. So as to supply the detailed images the sensation of floating above a reflective field, it is then struck numerous times.

6. After careful inspection, the coins are ultimately sealed inside a protective plastic capsule.

7. Finally, they're placed inside a stunning presentation case that's covered in blue velvet. Inside, the case is lined with satin and includes an authenticity certificate that's signed by the Director of the U.S. Mint.

Thus all that additional manufacturing expense, time, labour, energy, etc. is factored into the price of the proof eagle. That is the reason for the excess premium.

Additionally it is important to note the fact that proof type has never been handled by human hands and that is the reason why they are so highly sought after and are valued at more than their own common bullion counterpart.

And so now we know the real reason for the additional premium. Nonetheless, are the American Eagle Silver Eagle proofs worth the excess price?

Recently, I did some research on the well-known auction site, eBay, to attempt to ascertain the recent selling prices for the the year 2010 Silver Eagle Proofs.

Exactly what I learned was the fact that sell amount varied, depending upon the particular grade belonging to the coin -- whether or not it was PCGS PR70 First Strike or PR69, and so forth. At the time this particular article was written, the typical selling price seemed to be around .00.

That's an increase of greater than 30 % since their November 19th launch date. (Please note: the price of silver might have risen or declined during the time you might be reading this write-up and so existing auction prices might be much more or less, depending upon the spot price of silver).

Let's say, you'd purchased a regular bullion silver eagle on the exact same time frame, using the ending price of .35. You would now have a gain of only 9.69%!

It is also fascinating to take note that special edition silver proof coins like the 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle and also the 2006 Reverse Proof are usually valued at even more!

The 2011 Proof Silver Eagle coins won't be available for sale from the U.S. Mint until July 6, 2011. And even though you can no longer order the 2010 American Silver Eagle Proof coin through the U.S. Mint's website, they are still available for sale at: http://BullionBargains.us

The official silver bullion coin of the United States is the American Eagle. Originally minted in 1986 by the US Mint, the Silver American Eagle Coin is comprised of 99.9% pure silver with a weight of one troy ounce and has a nominal face value of one dollar. It was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act and it's weight and purity are certified by the United States Mint. There have been 3 versions of the Silver Eagle released for investors and collectors. There is the Bullion Silver Eagle, the Proof Silver Eagle and the Uncirculated Silver Eagle.

The very first Silver Eagle Coin was struck in San Francisco on October 29th 1986. The minting was presided over by the Secretary of The Treasury James A. Baker III at the San Francisco Assay Office. The event was dubbed the San Francisco Silver Rush of 1986.

The Bullion Eagle was originally minted from 1986-1998 at the San Francisco Mint and do not bear any mint mark. Then in 1999 for two years they were minted at bothe the Philadelphia Mint and the West Point Mint. However, since 2001 the coins have exclusively been minted at the West Point Mint in West Point, NY.

The Proof Silver Eagle originally was minted through the San Francisco Mint and had the "S" mint mark from 1986-1992. From there they moved to the Philadelphia Mint and were struck with a "P" mint mark. They remained there until 2001 when they made the move to the West Point Mint which is where they are still being minted today with the "W" mint mark. There was no 2009 Proof Silver Eagle but again in 2010 the Proof coin returned still minted out of West point.

Uncirculated Silver Eagle coins were minted from 2006-2008 and designed by the US Mint for collectors. The coins were struck at the West Point Mint using burnished blanks. Sometimes referred to as W Uncirculated or Burnished Uncirculated, these coins have been out of production since 2008.

==> SPECIAL RELEASE

There have also been a few Special Issue Silver Eagle Series released.

1993 saw the release of the Philadelphia Set which was issued to commemorate the bicentennial of the very first striking of American Coins at the Philadelphia Mint.

In 1995 there was a West pint Mint issued Silver Eagle issued along with the Philadelphia Mint release. This coin is known as the 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle and was sold as a part of the 10th Anniversary American Eagle 5 Coin Set. The set also included Proof Gold Eagles in 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz sizes. A very limited number of these sets were produced and they continue to be a highly desired piece.

2000 brought the United States Millennium Coinage and Currency Set that had a 2000 Silver Eagle Bullion Coin minted at the West Point Mint but without the "W" mint mark.It also included a 2000 Denver mint released Sacagawea Dollar and an uncirculated 1999 one dollar bill. There were only 75,000 sets minted and less than twenty are known to contain Sacagawea dollars that do not have a burnished finish.

In early 2004 the US Mint issued the Legacies of Freedom United States and United Kingdom Silver Bullion Coin Set. The set contained of a 2003 bullion Silver Eagle and a 2002 Silver Britannia bullion coin from the United Kingdom.

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the American Silver Eagle program in 2006, the United States Mint released a very special Reverse Proof Silver Eagle coin form the Philadelphia Mint. This Reverse Proof coin was available as part of a set that also included the standard Proof Silver Eagle and the new Burnished Uncirculated Silver Eagle coins. The Silver Reverse proof features a frosted background and mirrored surfaces.

The Uncirculated Silver Eagles were also issued with the 20th Anniversary Gold and Silver Eagle Set which had an extremely low issue of only 20,000 sets.
2007 and 2008 had the uncirculated Silver Eagle coins packaged with each years Philadelphia minted Presidential Dollars and Denver minted Sacagawea dollars in the start of the Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set.

==> SILVER EAGLE DESIGN

The design of the United States Silver Eagle's obverse side was taken from the Walking Liberty which had originally been used for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916-1947. It became one of the most iconic American Silver Coin designs and was a favorite of the American public. For that reason, the design was brought back for the Silver Eagle Bullion coin with the year of release, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST being added.

The reverse design has a heraldic eagle behind a shield grasping an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. It is holding a banner in its beak that is inscribed with E PLURBIS UNIM. It also has 13 stars representing the 13 original Colonies as well as UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1oz FINE SILVER ONE DOLLAR as well as the mint mark when there is one.

From its original minting to today, the Silver Eagle American Bullion Coin remains one of the most desired and collected coins in not only the American Silver Coin series but of all of the US minted bullion coins. With special releases, yearly mintings and even the odd error popping up Silver Eagles are a great choice for every collector.

Have you ever held a bag full of coins and felt how heavy this bag was. Well unlike the normal coins there are special coins that investors can make arrangements to buy. These special coins will not make a small money bag feel like it weighs a ton. Instead these coins can add some more value to an investor’s portfolio. These coins are the American Eagle Coins.

These American eagle coins are really very special. Instead of being minted and sold for commercial use the American eagle coins are issued only to authorized dealers for selling purposes. You will be able to find these American Eagle coins at banks, brokerage companies, wholesalers, precious metal firms and other places that have been approved of by the US Mint.

These American Eagle Coins can be found in gold, silver and platinum metals. This means that the quality on these coins is very high. Since these American Eagle Coins are not sold directly to the public but in proof sets, these must be bought at the current prices for gold and the other metals. To make the purchasing weight value the same for each coin these American eagle coins have a specific weight that is standard.

You will be able to buy your American Eagle Coins in one ounce, one-tenth ounce, one-quarter ounce and one-half ounce denominations. With these set weights you will be able to have American Eagle Coins that you can add to your portfolio with no worries about its market value.

There is another name that is given for the American Eagle Coin. It is also called American Eagle Bullion Coins. The program to bring these coins out for investors to add physical amounts of gold and silver into their investments came into being in 1986. At this time the only American Eagle Coins were the gold and silver eagle coins that had at one time been in circulation. The platinum uncirculated American Eagle Coins were brought out into the open 1997.

American Eagle Coins are easily recognizable because of the designs on the face of the coins. Each type of coin will feature the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design of Lady Liberty. And the most expensive of these American Eagle coins are those of the gold Saint-Gaudens 1934 twenty dollar pieces.

The reason for the high value of these American Eagle coins lies in the presidential decree of 1934 that banned the use of all forms of gold bullion. And since the twenty dollar American Eagle coins were made from gold they were immediately recalled and melted down. A few however, escaped this fate and survived in the world hunted by every avid coin collector.

The long and short of it though, is that it doesn’t matter if you never get the chance to see the 1934 gold Saint-Gaudens coin. What does matter is that you learn to properly recognize and value the American Eagle coins that you do have in your possession and to keep them safe.

One of the more recent silver dollars, the American Silver Eagle dollar coin was struck for the first time in 1986. The coins contain official silver bullion. The United States Mint produced the coins for unique reasons, including a way to help fund Individual Retirement Account investments. The coin is guaranteed to have 99.9 percent pure silver, and contain one troy ounce of it. The coin is only coin to have this combination. It has a nominal face value of one dollar.

Coin collectors may want to consider the American Silver Eagle dollar coin as a collectors piece, since the coins were produced with a proof version specifically for this reason. The coins have been produced at three minutes, including the Philadelphia mint, or "P" mintmark coins. The earlier coins were struck in San Francisco and have an "S" mintmark. The latest proofs come from the West Point, New York mint, and have a "W" mintmark on the reverse.

The coins were designed in with the Walking Liberty design. This design was also used on the half dollar coin that was minted from 1916 through 1947. The image is considered to be an iconic American symbol and a favorite in the country. On the opposite side of the coin is a heraldic eagle, with wings spread. The Walking Liberty design was created by Adolph A Weinman while the eagle was created by John Mercanti.

The American Silver Eagle dollar coin is one that many people enjoy collecting, for various reasons including the fact that it is rather valuable. There are various factors that affect the value of the coins, including the year minted. If the coin is uncirculated, that too raises the value of it, as does being a proof. Before purchasing these coins, do some research to fully understand the true value behind them. Most dates are not expensive, since there is a good supply of these coins today. Some of the coins are valued much higher, such as those from 1993, which are valued well over $100. The 1995W issue of the coin is work several thousand dollars since only a small amount were sold.

The coins were minted beginning in 1986, with a bulk uncirculated at about 5,393,005 and proofs at 1,446,778. The 2008 mintage of the coins were 20,583,000 in standard circulation with an estimated 713,353 as proof. You can learn more about the exact mintage of these coins at the United States Mint.

As with all types of coins, it is important to understand the full value of the coin before investing. With the American Silver Eagle dollar coin, you will find that most coins sell for about $20 to $30, but of course this changes often. If you are hoping to collect the coins, start with the oldest coins, which are traditionally more valuable since there are fewer of them. Also, consider the actual wear on the coins. Coins that have substantial wearing such as on Lady Liberty\'s garment or on the wings of the eagle are worth less than those in good condition are.
