Unlike gold which never goes away, silver is actually consumed. Most of the functions for silver actually "use it up" never to be seen again. Since the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) predicts that all remaining silver on earth (including what's still in the ground) will be used up within the next 24 years, there is a "strictly limited" supply of silver.

In 1942, the U.S. Government had over 3 billion ounces of silver, however they ran completely out several years ago; even the nationwide defense stockpile is gone. Over 90% of all of the silver mined up to now (i.e., over the past 5,000 years) has been used up, and is gone forever.

Right now, it's been estimated there is more than 5 times as much gold within the known world supply compared to the world supply of silver.

To make the situation even worse, there are many more applications for silver than for gold. In other phrases, there is a big, rising demand for silver. A growing demand with a strictly limited supply for anything can only imply one thing: prices are going to skyrocket.
This implies it's imperative to defend your monetary future and buy silver now. One of the best methods to buy silver is to buy silver coins, but that is a subject best left for other articles. In the the rest of this article, I'm going to present a checklist of the more widespread uses for silver … predominantly applications that literally consume silver … functions responsbile for the dwindling supply disaster enfolding right now:

* Rechargeable and disposable batteries
* Electroplating on steel bearings
* Corrosion-resistant solder
* Silver brazing allows in fridges, air conditioners, automobiles, aerospace, etc.
* Production of plastics including adhesives, building lamination resins, plywood, dinnerware, packaging supplies, insulation, and more.
* Production of sentimental plastics utilized in polyester textiles
* Molded objects such as insulated handles, computer key tops, and appliance components.
* Mylar tape used in audio and video recording
* Oxidizers in metallurgy
* Silver bullion and proof coins
* Silverware and jewelry
* Electrical conductors, switches, fuses, and contacts.
* Electrical appliances, timers, thermostats, and sump pumps.
* Automotives
* Silver relays used in home equipment and home care machines (e.g., vacuum cleaners).
* Electronic circuit boards and components.
* PC keyboards.
* Antennas
* RF Identifications (RFID's) or Smart Tags
* Automobile windshields
* Silver plating
* Mirrors and glass coatings
* Prescribed drugs
* Prescription eyeglasses
* Xrays and photographic movies
* Photo voltaic cells
* Bactericides and algaecides
* Water purifiers and swimming pool chemical substances
* And new functions for silver are invented every year.

If you're like most people, you are shocked by the list provided above. Hopefully, you possibly can see the severity of the upcoming problem, but what do you have to do about it.
Well, you can clearly do nothing, and simply watch the show, or you'll be able to ensure your financial future and buy silver now.

You may have noticed the price of silver (and all the mining stocks for silver) have dropped in price. This recent drop provides you a rare opportunity to get your share before the impending explosion sets in. Check it out ... learn more ... now!

These days, more and more people are getting involved in coin collecting as a serious business, or as a fun hobby. To answer the growing demand of people looking for rare and valuable old coins, a lot of coin dealers are selling these coins. Sad to say, though, that this has been an outlet for a lot of counterfeiters out there.

To guide you in buying a real Silver Eagle dollar, this article will provide interesting facts about the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the American Silver Eagle, and some ways to distinguish a real one from a counterfeit.

What is the American Silver Eagle?

The Silver Eagle dollar was first released by the U.S. Mint on November 24, 1986. It contains one troy ounce of .999 pure silver, and has a nominal face value of one dollar. Its weight and content is certified by the U.S. Mint and it is authorized by the U.S. Congress. For coin collectors, the U.S. Mint produces a proof version of the coin.

The Silver Eagle dollar has been produced at three minting locations, including Philadelphia ('P' mintmark), San Francisco ('S' mintmark) which issued proofs, and more recent proofs from West Point.

Physical Descriptions

An authentic Silver Eagle dollar will weigh 31.103 grams, and its diameter is 40.60 mm, with a thickness of 2.98 mm. Its edge must be reeded, and the Silver content is 99.9%. The obverse design features Liberty walking and is adapted from the design of Adolph A. Weinman during the year 1916. The reverse design features a Heraldic Eagle with Shield, which was designed by John Mercanti on the year1986.

How do I tell if a Silver Eagle is fake?

* Check the year of minting

By knowing the minting years of a coin, you are one step closer to identifying a fake from a real coin. The Silver Eagle was minted on the year 1986. So if you see one for sale that has the year 1906 or any year that is before 1986, then consider it fake. It wasn't the U.S. Mint that made the coin. Save yourself the money and don't buy it.

* Weigh it

If you're equipped with knowledge about the coin, you're better to discriminate one from a fake. A true Silver Eagle dollar will weigh 31.103 grams. Also consider the diameter. Remember it should be 40.66 mm, not anything lower or higher than that. So, even if your coin 'looks' real, weight it to see if it really is.

* Appearance

A fake Silver Eagle is dull, grayish looking, and not lustrous. It could also have a soapy appearance to it.

* Check the reeding

Remember that an authentic Silver Eagle is reeded, so if you happen by one that is not, skip it. It's fake.

* Test

You can perform the drop test, and listen to its distinctive ring. If you drop it and it produces a dink sound, then this is most likely not silver. Keep in mind that a Silver Eagle is 99.9% silver. You can also do the magnetic test, where if the coin is attracted to the magnet, then it is not real. It is probably copper made to look 'silver'.

As a whole, distinguishing a real from a fake Silver Eagle is easy, for as long as you are equipped with relevant information about the coin.

The Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coin is a Canadian bullion coin issued yearly by the government of Canada. This coin was initially minted by the Royal Canadian Mint (RMC), in 1988. This coin, which is the highest ranked bullion in world, has an actual value of 5 Canadian dollars for a 1 ounce coin.

Maple Leaf Silver coins have a certified purity of .9999 (99.99%), which is among the highest purity when compared to most other bullion rounds and bars which have purity levels of about 99.90% (.999). Some other features of the Silver Maple Leaf include a maple leaf on the reverse side of nearly every issue with a sculpture of Queen Elizabeth on the obverse, a weight of one troy ounce (32.1 grams) of silver, and the phrase "Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur" can be found on the reverse side alongside the bottom of every issue.

Issue Variations
Yearly variations of the Maple Leaf Silver Coin have included holographic enhancements, proof releases found on the 1989 edition only, a colored maple leaf that had a different design not found on the regular issues, and in 2009 a coin was issued in commemoration of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

During the minting of this series there have been some issues worth noting. In 1998 a single issued 10 oz version was made to celebrate the 10th anniversary for the coin series. In 1999 all silver coins were designed with a privy mark in celebration of the RCM Maple Leaf Program. In 2000, the coins featured a privy mark with the number 2000 and fireworks, and another variation was made in celebration of the new millennium, which resulted in the coins having two dates 1999 and 2000.

Market Value
Just like any other minted bullion investment, the market value for these is also dependent on few factors. The factors that influence their value includes the exact amount of silver bullion, current prices of silver bullion, a guarantee of purity and weight by mint and the premium which is based on a particular issue's demand and supply. All bullions start with a "spot price" which is given each day in major newspapers and other news sources, in the investment section.

The pricing of the Silver version differs from that of Gold and Platinum versions. The demands for the silver versions have resulted in the prices which are far higher compared to the actual silver bullion value. This especially happened during the 1996 and 1997 versions when the prices were quite high due to limited mintages. In 1997 around 101,000 coins were minted while in 1999 more than 1.2 million coins were minted.

The shrinking economy we have nowadays is pushing people to resort to other ways of making an income like working over the internet. There is one method that is still pretty much a secret to many. Nobody would have ever guessed that selling and buying silver is easier than people think.

It all starts with these coins. What are they? These are everyday coins made of silver that have a greater value than it's worth. Silver quarters, dimes, nickels, vintage half-dollars and dollar coins combined can be sold by the bag. These coins dated before 1965 have a 90% silver content which therefore, makes them more valuable than their face value.

Buying junk silver coins is being used as an alternate investment move since world markets are valuing gold and silver at higher rates nowadays. This means that you could buy your junk silver coins by bulk and sell them at a higher price later on. In a way, it is similar to the stock exchange but this time you're dealing with actual silver material.

It is also a recession-proof idea that will keep your funds safe since you are purchasing physical items instead of owning stock or an electronic fund. These coins are still legal tender and easily recognized. They are also popular with survivalists as a sort of "doomsday" currency and the small coins are perfect for bartering for smaller items, as opposed to much more valuable gold coins.

Junk silver coins are also found in the U.K. where coins made before 1946 have at least 50% silver content. Canada and Australia are also other countries that have similar junk silver coins.

American Silver Eagle Coins are one of the most popular and best ways to invest in silver. They also make great keepsakes and gifts. These are considered to be the most beautiful of the silver coins ever minted in the history of United States of America.

Minted since 1986, it is the United State Mint's Dollar coin minted specially for silver bullion for collectors. This paved the way for commercial success of silver and gold bullion coins that were sold to the public. These are deemed as the official silver bullion of the USA because of the purity, content, and actual weight. There are several investors and bullion collectors across the globe interested in the American Silver Eagle coins.

Design of American Silver Eagle Coins:

The silver proof coin has an Adolph A. Weinman's full-length figure of Liberty on its obverse side. The Liberty is enveloped completely in the U.S. Flag with her right hand extended while her left hand holds branches of laurel and oak. The coins reverse side has a heraldic eagle with a shield. The right talon has an olive branch while the left holds arrows. This was specially designed by the United States Mint engraver John Mercanti. This in short portrays the stand of United States over the world conditions.

The U.S. mint restarted issuing Silver Proof Sets in 1992. This continues till date mainly because of its popularity. Silver Proof Set collections are easy to collect is one is planning to start a collection. The specifications indicate that the American Eagle Silver Proof Coin has a purity of 99.9%. The face value of the one ounce coin is 1 dollar. The dimensions are marked at 1.598 inches in diameter. The coin weighs around 1.0000 troy ounces and contains around 0.999 silver troy ounces. These are constant favorites among the collectors and are available in plenty until the next release. 1987 was the first year of mint of a Silver Proof.

Tips for Potential American Silver Eagle Coin Investments:

1. The largest portion of the value in the coin is the silver content, so focus on quanity instead of buying mint condition coins which are graded by PCGS and NGC. These coins will be the backbone of your silver coin portfolio and help you in a better way and this will help you to keep readily liquidated silver bullion coins.

2. If you buy a sealed mint box you may be lucky enough to find some mint condition coins for free, which you may be able to resell for a higher price.

3. Check the date of the coin and see how many were minted in that year. Some coins are given an extra premium due to low availability.

4. Compare the coin's premium over the price of silver. The premium can fluctuate, especially when the coins are in high demand.

The American Silver Eagle is hard to come by and collectors are on constant look out for these coins. No matter how much you invest in American silver eagle coins, it is easy to buy in small or large quantities at a site such as tradeplacer.com to build and fortify your precious metals portfolio.

What are silver junk coins? It is said to be known that all the coins produced before the year 1965 have been given this name. It also know that most of these contained 90% silver but what about the coins which were not 90%. Sources reveal that the silver content varied from 30-90%. We are here today to discuss about a particular set of coins that have gained their importance in the last five decades. Even if the coins containing any other contents of silver didn't work, there was one that stood out and those were 40% silver coins.

Since there was dimes, quarters and half dollars produced during that period, that too in many forms it is difficult for one to specifically locate the 40% silver coins. Well to make it easier for you, we shall tell you which are the coins which were made to have 40% silver content. For that we shall go back in time, well the quarters which are dated 1965 or later all were copper-nickel coins, but there was a transition which saw the emergence of the Bicentennial quarters which were specially sold by the Mint in Mint Sets or Proof Sets.

These specially minted quarters had 40% silver content and to identify them easier, all these quarters had an "S" mint mark on them. Then we also saw the rise of the Kennedy Half Dollars, at the start all the coins produced had 90% silver content, later on coins produced from 1965 to 1970 had 40% silver content. Then we also saw another set of coins that is the Bicentennial halves and the Eisenhower dollars. All these produced from 1971 to 1974 had 40% silver content. These 40% silver coins were again distinguished by using the "S" Mint mark over them.

The price of these coins today is slightly less than the spot price of silver in the market. The reasons why they hold lesser value is because of the increased popularity of 90% silver coins and original bullion silver coins. The value of a these 40% silver coins today is as follows, almost 80 or 90 cents for a dime, then about .00 USD for a quarter and close to .00 USD for a half dollar. These coins are also available in form of silver bags with their face values ranging from 0, 0 or 00. One can look up the internet for more buying options.

My first experience buying silver in California was mixed - I had to pay 8% tax on top of the premium, but I did get a proof coin when I ought to have gotten a regular ounce. Not a bad deal! Also, I explain the biggest Cash4Gold scam ever - it was when the Federal Reserve, along with Nixon, took us off the gold standard! He literally gave us cash for gold, but in a bad way!

Collecting coins is one of the world's oldest hobbies. Long before there was paper money, rulers, emperors, and kings had their noble visages stamped on precious metals like gold and silver. Scholars of ancient Roman history have long believed that Caesar Augustus (63 BC—14 AD), the first Roman Emperor, was an avid coin collector. According to the great Roman historian, Suetonius, the emperor often gave them as gifts to his friends and loved ones.

There is even archaeological evidence that suggests people have been collecting coins since at least the Roman era, and possibly even earlier! Coins may have been collected as far back as the 4th century BC. And since coins of that era were considered works of art, it stands to reason that some connoisseurs would have collected them.

Eminent collectors speculate that coin collecting most likely became a demotic hobby when Emperor Trajanus Decius (249-251 AD) had the Roman mint issue coins of all the Roman Emperors that came before him. These coins inspired rulers of future generations to do the same. Most U.S. coins, for example, are based on the old Roman currency with the side profile of a president on the obverse, instead of an emperor.

During the 15th century, coin collecting became known as the "hobby of kings," because many members of the European nobility enjoyed it. These royal family members had the wealth and influence to purchase ancient coins from all over the world. Like most hobbies that involve collectibles, the rarer and older the item, the more people wanted it. Coin collecting became so popular that great artists were commissioned to make replicas of famous ancient coins, which were then added to impressive personal collections.

Because of its popularity, forgeries were quite common. As a result, major collectors were forced to employ scholars who had studied the history of ancient coins and could spot a fake. This was when coin collecting became numismatics, a word that means the collection and/or study or coins.

By the 17th century, huge collections were assembled, studied, and cataloged. The former hobby soon became a respected academic pursuit and many of its top scholar published popular and influential books during this period. Now called numismatics by most, the study of coins was considered a science.

With the decline of rigid class structures in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, more and more middle class and even lower class people took up coin collecting as a simple hobby. Others recognized that coins were a great investment opportunity, since their value seemed to always increase. Basic handbooks and coin guides were created for the non-academic novice during this time.

Modern Collecting

The internet has been a great boon to coin collectors everywhere as it has connected experienced numismatists with interested neophytes from all over the globe. Huge internet auction sites like eBay also make it easy for collectors to buy and sell coins. The only problem is that most people don't know very much about collecting coins, which means they often make bad choices. If you are interested in starting a coin collection, there are several things you should know.

What to buy?

Just as in any new endeavor, the novice should never pretend to know more than he actually does. While it can certainly be tempting to dive in head first, most experts strongly suggest that you start small and learn a bit about the hobby before you buy anything.

One of the more reliable ways to get value for your money is to purchase a coin that is stamped on a precious metal, like gold or silver. But with the price of gold at a record high, few new collectors can afford gold coins, which is why silver coins are such a popular alternative. Over the past two decades, the price of silver has risen rapidly, faster, in fact, than the price of gold. It currently stands at around 17 dollars per ounce.

The U.S. Mint is well aware of the rise in popularity of silver as both a precious metal and a collectible and they offer several silver proof sets each year. These sets start at about and obviously are tied to the price of silver. Probably their most popular offering is the U.S. Silver Eagle. The Eagle is made from one full ounce of silver bullion and they are generally sold for just a few dollars over the present spot price of silver.

Because of its purity (99.9 % pure silver), the Eagle remains the most collectible modern silver coin on the market. Though the Mint does not normally release print runs, they have issued limited addition sets in the past. For example, their 20th anniversary Silver Eagle Set was limited to 20,000. The set was a huge hit and almost all of them sold. Because silver bullion prices have increased, these limited edition sets have become quite valuable. Most limited sets are only available for a short period of time, often for only a few months. So, when the U.S. Mint announces a special set, coin collectors line up.
