The 1999 silver proof state quarter sets (10 coins) are almost $300. Can someone tell me why?

I'm trying to understand this. Any idea what percentage of $300 might be attributable to 1) first set in a series 2) lowest mintage of all the sets 3) silver prices and 4) Christmas season. Any opinion if the 99 sets will increase much more in value??

  2. You already have a good understanding of why the 1999 sets are worth more. Lower mintage, fewer going around will probably mean that they will continue to rise in value over the years.

First in the series: The state quarter program will end next year (unless the unlikely happens and a bill is passed to include US territories in the state quarter program for one more year of coins). People want to have a complete set and due to low mintages the early ones are more difficult to get.

As the price of silver rises so will the coins. Though silver’s not high enough to justify $300 for the set.

Christmas may or may not have anything to do with the value. Mint sets always make good Christmas gifts but I believe they will probably retain their value after the Christmas season is over.
